Oh Deer Sculpture Finished in 2014

 About Nathan Slape

I grew up wondering around the mesas and sandstone monuments of Western Colorado, I imagine this is what gave me my appreciation for everything stone. As a child I could always be found drawing or playing with clays. In high school I played around with photography (pre digital), painting and even acting. Once out of high school, I bounced around and tried many creative jobs such as carpentry, glass blowing and tattooing. In the Fall of 1999, I entered the BFA program at my local college and quickly found that I fit best in the three dimensional sculpture classes. Much of my focus was placed on the creation of bronze sculptures created in the school's foundry. In the Fall of 2003, I signed up for my first stone sculpting course and became completely hooked on this rather challenging art form. In the spring of 2005, I graduated from college with a BFA.

I've been working hard at developing my sculpting skills since college. I've worked with quite a few professional sculptors and helped them create large scale stone and bronze sculptures for cities across the United States. My time with them turned me into a very efficient sculpting machine!

I now live in Denver, Colorado where I make the daily 20 foot commute from my house to my studio. I have found myself drifting into a very abstract style over the last few years. I like the harmony that is reached by combining my forms into the beautiful stones I shape. My style is a very fluid one which allows me to quickly adapt to the various stones I sculpt. I don't believe in going after a stone with a set plan, its more of just an idea to see if I can pull something off. By doing things this way I never get too upset when a stone breaks, I just roll with the punches and usually end up creating something even more interesting than I had originally started making.

Since 2016 I have been showing my works at the annual Loveland Sculpture in the Park Show in Loveland, Colorado. It is an honor to be one of the 160 sculptors that are juried into this show and I work hard every year to create 16 new stone sculptures specifically for this show. I also love taking on special projects for people who want something truly unique for their homes of offices.

Stay tuned, my ambitions are great and you never know where my dreams might take me!
